Artwork:
”Socks” is a presentation of women within society standards. As they are overtly sexualized, in a wanting for the body. This is presented through the sole presentation of this form, and no identy being presented. Whilst the natural state positive dosent presents the women in a limelight. Rather they are surrounded by cluttered fields, with no draw. Inspiration for the piece was from Marcel Dzama and Gary Panter. This piece does not manipulate others work.
Inspiration/ Critical Investigation:
A source of inspiration for the piece is Marcel Dzama’s “Don't make me target”, which was made in 2017. Within Dzama’s work there is a consistent presence of human action, which can be seen within the artwork used for inspiration. As there are three female bodies presented as targets, this is conveyed through the clothing. As there are black and white targets on the dresses worn by the three women. There is also arrows being shot and on the three targets, which are being struck by a female in red. The human action is present through the female actors within the artwork. Alongside the element there is also a use of color in order to represent each party within the piece. As the targets remain in monochrome tones of black and white. While the women shooting the arrows remain in red along side the arrows. Another presence within Dzama work is the use of folk elements which include child like elements. This can be seen within the artwork of inspirations through the wolf at the bottom, who is also struckin. Overall the piece embodies elegance through the placement of the female bodies. As even though a contrast of pain is present, there is still a maintain of poise.
Another source for the piece is Gary Panter’s “Lime”, which was made in 1999. As a comic artist, there is a presence of comical imagery within his works. As can be seen within the artwork used for inspiration, through the two females actions. The human action is violate and the bodies reaction ressemble pain and energy. There is no regard given to maintaining composure by the two females. In contrast to Dzama’s artwork, there is not a maintain for poise despite the pain present. The use of color within the artwork by Panter is monochrome throughout. This sets no particular symbolism for different people or aspects within the artwork, rather this holds all elements to the same regard. There is also a scenery present within the background of the artwork. As the females are centered within a city scape, which brings a sense of reality. In contrast to Dzama’s price which is isolated within a blank background, this leaves the actors as the only presence. Panter’s artwork presents relastice elements through the human action, and holds a comical composure.

Process/ Techniques/ Experimentation:
Process:
Through the process of creating the artwork various steps were done in order to reach the final products. The process for both pieces created are similar. Initially a sketch is created and outlined for the forms. This is done in lead/pencil, this allows for change to be easily made. A general form is created within the first image. This is then gone over and refined in order to add more details. For the second image in particular, the hands are given greater details. This then finalizes the general concept for the wanted form, for the illustraion. Next a mixture of colors is created from the acrylic paints. Initial the skin tone was created first. This was down through a base mixture of an even amount of yellow, red and blue. This created a dark brown, which is then lightend. As it is lighthend it becomes a lighter brown. Though in order to achieve the wanted skin tone yellow and small amounts of red were added. This lead to a more flesh like tone being created from the mixture. Once this was achieved it is then lighted even further with the color white. This process of mixing and lighting the skin tone can be seen within the third image of swatches. As there is a progression of the dark brown into the pale skin tone. This progression can be seen within the left column of the swatches. Prior to applying the wanted skin tone to the illustraion board, a test is conducted on a mock limb. When done intially with the standard acrylic paint, the wanted soft tone of color was not achieved. Water was then added to the color in order to lighten and soften the paint. Adding water to the paint also served to aid in blending, highlights and adding washes to both illustrations. In particular the highlight of the red tone was the main objective when creating the watercolors for the illustraion. As with the base acrylic paint, there was too thick of an appercanece and no smooth digression into the combination of tones. As with the watercolor pure red, there was blend occurring with the skin tone. No color overpowered the over, rather they became one. Then a darker brown tone was created in order to add depth and shadow to the skin tone. This was done with a light brown and yellow tone. This was used in order to shade and add depth to the crevices. This includes areas such as the back arch.
Once the skin tones are completed, then layers of clothing are added. The inspiration of Dzama impacted the issue of black socks on the women within the first piece, as such this is followed with the clothing iteams. This added elements consist of a water color pure black. As the water colors allows for more depth and tone with one color. This addition can be seen within the fifth image of the process. Lastly the black is then used to cover the heads of the bodies. This is done on top of an already present face and two no existent. This wash of a black circle serves as a form to highlight the body. Final touches are then added with a larger ratio of black paint to the water. This allows for a darker tone to be achieved rather than the opposite wash. This is then added in order to create the tones of depth. This can be seen done within areas of the black socks. Finally within the sixth image and outline of the form is done in a fine point sharpie.
The brushes used within both illustrations is shown above. Larger brushes were used within the second piece created. As this was used for larger washes such as the ground and sky. Larger brushes allowed for an even and fuller wash of the color. While a fine point brush was used in smaller locations, and for finner detail. The 1/4 brush was used within both pieces in order to paint the black socks.
The same process for pairing was conducted for the positive illustration, though in monochrome tones. As following the inspiration of Panter. There was also a use of washes within the background of the artwork. This was done with a higher ratio of water, to the paint. Using a larger brush while doing this also allowed for an even wash to be done. In order to create the color for the wash, a light grey was used. This was done with mixing a little black with white. Rather than having a tone for the women, there is a use of shading and outline present. This follows the style of Panter in a natural and uneat order. Detail is then again added, though is more prevalent within the spastic fields. Overall there is a use of monchomre tones and outling in order to form a natural toned piece.

Techniques:
When completing the illustraion various techniques were used throughout. A technique that was learned through experimentation was to use water based paints in order better blend colors. In this particular instance water colors are used in order to blend the skin tones within the intake illustration. As the skin tone blends with the overlapping red tones, due to the use of water colors. This was found to be better than the intial form of the paint. As rather than blending these colors just overlapped, which was unwanted.
Another technique that was used when creating the illustration, was sketching a pencil outline. As this created a border for what is to be done. The outline did not consist of bold lines or shading. As it was not wanted for it to appear after the paint was applied. This allowed for the artwork to have the wanted form.
When mixing colors swatches were done prior to using the colors. This allowed for me to view how the colors would dry on the paper. As when wet the colors appeared lighter than they actual were. This was true for the skin tones. This technique was helpful in order to view and use the wanted skin tones.

Reflection/ Critique: |
Evaluations: |
In reflection to the artwork made adjustments could be made to the piece. As error came bout when making the positive illustration. This was due to the lack of outling and revising present prior to painting the final. This can be seen through the lack of proportions between the two background people. If more time was spent revising the sketch and adding detail, then the porportions would have been better. In addition to the same pieces error, there could have been more testing of swatches down prior to painting. As this error can be seen within the thick sky. While the ground is more soft and consistents of developing tones. The sky served as an experiment within the piece itself. The negative piece also bring along much space. More concepts could have been brought up when sketching in order to develop a sting scene while also keeping the blank background present. Overall in criatura to the illustrations made, there are elements that can be developed upon.

Marcel Dzama’s artwork served as a source of inspiration for the piece made. Dzama’s work impacted the elements present within my own artwork. Similarities are present in the elgnat presentation of the model. As despite the factors there is still a willingness to act. Though Dzama uses the women in a harmful situation. I have rather used them in a sexualized instance. In both pieces there is a focus on the models. This is done through having a minimal, with a white background. There is also a use of masks, that is continued within Dzama work. Whilst I took inspiration from this aspect, in order to convey a strip of identity for the women. This was done through using black circles in order to completely cover there faces. This creates a replication of the bodies, which does not hold them as individuals. Though within Dzama’s work there is folk elements present through the animal. There is also a presents of higher elements between the two parties. Whilst my piece only presents one party, that is being presented.
Gary Panter served as a source of inspiration for the piece made. His artwork impacted and influenced the elements within my positive piece. Panter uses a natural background with a city scape and a field. While two women are standing in a fight within the field. I use this cluttered field within my peice in order to present a natural setting. This allows for a limelight not to be present on the models. As Panter influenced the positive not holding a elgnat pose. Panter uses a comical instance of a fight between the two women, in order to presentation of emotion. This itself counters Dzama artwork, in a presentation of emotion when harmed. Though on the contrary the comical sense is not replicated within the artwork made. There is also an eye that is presented to the viewer. As the center of the trio views, which is in replication of the negatives modles. Overall both artist served as inspiration for the artwork made and influenced the pieces. |
Ideas:
The ideas outlined, are rough concepts for what is to be created for the illustration. This includes a base outline of what the illustraion must present. The negative and positive of the illustration is the key concept which must be present, no matter the meaning. Hence there are two art peice are made for the illustration.

Experimentation:
Throughout the process of making the artworks, expermentation was coducted in various forms. This includes with the tones of the colors. As color was added to the artwork through paint, mixtures and various shades were created. These were searched and tested, to ensure the tone was correct before applying to the final piece. As above in the experimentation not all of the swatched colors were used. This experimenting with the colors allowed for the wanted color to be achieved. It also avoided the errors having to be fixed within the artwork. To the left row there is swatches and progression towards the wanted skin tone. As through the process red, blue or yellow were added in order to create a clear tone.
Within the next image, there is development of colors as they overlap on the skin tones. One of the skin colored figures can be see surrounded by color, but not absorbing it. This was my initial attempt to overlapping various shades. Though the proved to just soke through the skin tones and surroned it with red and blue. Through this experimentation I found it was better to blend with wet colors rather than dry. An attempt is also made to outline the figures with a light brown shade using the acrylic paints. Through the experimentation I’ve found this to appear unatural. As the colors did not properly correlate with each other. This process can be viewed to the right of the second photo. As there is a progression present in how the skin tone is painted to the right of second image. There is also experimentation present with the type of red to use for the bodies. As a lighter shade and pure red are experimented with. Through this extermination I found that using a pure water color red, allowed for a light mixture. Overall this expermentation with skin tones and paints allowed better learning as to how use the paints.

Reflection:
The artwork created reflects elements of my inspiration, that was used prior to creating. As there is intel element of women being present within the illustration. This is reflective of both my inspirations. As Dzama focused on the elegance of women being present. This elegance is held and disregards the harm present. My work is reflective upon this and the sexuality of women is highlighted rather than their identy. Dzama touches upon the concept, through the identical women wearing masks. While the one shooting the arrows is not concealed with a mask. Overall from Dzama the identity of women served as inspiration, as what is wanted to be presented. Whilst inspiration was gather from Gary Panter, through the natural sense of the scene present. Rather than highlighting them, their is a clutter present, which sets a tone. They are also not held to higher standard when presented as they are simplified and not exaggerated when made.
There were success and failures present when creating the artwork. When creating the artwork, I gained a better understanding of blending using watercolors. I also learned the effects of a wash and how the amount of water impact the paper used. A success that I felt occurred was through the blending of skin tones, as the overlapping was not rough. Rather using and testing the affects of the watercolors allowed for a better presentation. Though failures were present when it came to creating an overall wash within the second illustration. As the was spread to an unwanted extent for the sky, which made a darker tone. Though a light wash sky was trying to be made. In reflection more water and less paint could have been used in order to achieve the wanted tone. Overall success, failures and reflections occurred throughout making the process which better strengthen my knowledge and skills.

Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause effect relationship between your inspiration and its effect on your artwork?
The relation between my inspiration, impacted the meaning of my artwork and the style. As Dzama served as inspiration for an elegant presentation of women. While Panter presented a irrational yet natural presentation of women within life.
What is the overall approach the author has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
Dzama approaches the use of women as objects, that are to be used as targets. There faces are conclrad with masks and they accpect this pain with no regard. While Panter has a comical story fight occur between the women, where all pain is expressed.
What kind of generalization and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, culture, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
When researching my inspiration I gained a understanding of how women are generalized and objected. As Dzama uses the presentation of mask and people in elegant yet unusual instances. This presented a general non resistance to the pain being inflicted.
What is the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
The central idea that surrounded my inspirations were the presentation of women. As though both contrast in how they are presented they both follow the base of women.
What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research?
When researching I made inferences on Panters comical and natural presentation of women. As regrading his background as a comic book artist. The artwork used for inspiration was also part of an assortment of ink washes, which left little detail present.
