Artwork:
”Self Portrait” was inspired by Andre Derain’s “Portrait of Matisse” and Kei Mineo’s “unknow”. Bothe of these artworks influenced the expressive nature and use of brush strokes within the peice. As a use of color in combination with the thick strokes is used within the piece. The theme of the peice is a portrayal of oneself, through the form of color. There was not the presence of manipulation within this picece of other’s work.
Inspiration/ Critical Investigation:
André, Derain. Portrait of Matisse. 1905. Oil on Canvas
This artwork is apart of the fauvism period, in which it was created in 1905. In particular Fauvism is noted for its importance as a differ yet similar to expressionism within Germany. For this particular piece portraits where some of each Matisse and Derain himself. As each artist painte one another. This artwork forcuse on expressive aspects through stokes of color. These colors that are present within the portrait are also not true skin tones. As a yellow and it’s shades are used more expressively. As these peice does not focus on portraying exact detail, but rather on the brush strokes and the use of color. The use of color also follows the hues and shade of light. The most notable is the use of a bold read within the top cheek of the face. This is but a single stroke of red, while the bright yellow surround. This use of color presents highlights, in contrast to the shadows of the left of the piece. |
Mieno, Kei. Unknown. 2018. Oil on CanvasKei Mieno is a current Japanese artist, who’s main work focus on presenting exact detail. This particular piece made by him focuses on the aspects of expressive. This is done through the use of vibrant colors and brush strokes. This can be seen either the fore ground of the piece. As there are vibrant strokes of various colors, which include blue, white, yellow, red and green. Even the blue within the background is expressive through the form of the strokes. As such the paint is not left and pairings through solid strokes, but rather app went strokes that contrast and are bold. Though within this oil paiting there is still a presence of relaity. As the skin tones and the detail is done in order to replicate a reality. The skin tone is not expressive as Derain. Overall this piece focus on expressive Apache’s throigh bsuh stories and color, while also presenting reality.

Process/ Techniques/ Experimentation:
Process:
The process of the creating the slef portrait, was a multi step process. Initially the canvas was created, this was done with 3 ft by 3ft frame. The frame is put togther and then staples gun togther. Before this is done an angle so sued in order to ensure that the angles are right angles. Once the wooden frame is made than the canvas is added to the frame. This is done then the canvas is cut and stapled onto the wooden frame. A hand was needed in order to staple and hold the canvas tight on the frame. As the canvas was not wanted to be too lose this would not be prime for painting. Though it was kept in mind that adding gesso would tighten the canvas. So the canvas was not wanted to be made too tight or too loss. Then once the canvas is staples on the corners are then folded. The corners are to filed at the edge and done appleaing. As the corners can be seen when having up the canvas. Each other’s was three staples in order to derive the fold. Once the canvas is entirely stapled on then it is time to gesso the canvas. The gesso serves as the base of the canvas and should be done evenly. When putting in the gesso it should be done in the same direction each time in order to achieve even strokes. Two layers of gesso where applied to this particular canvas. A larger brush is also used in order to apply the gesso. After a wash is then done of the color to be used for the piece. This is done with the color canary yellow, with a mixture of white in order to lighten the background. Similar to how the gesso applied this is done with an even coat in order to create a smooth base. A lager brush is again used in order to create a more even and larger files areas. Once this is completed then a sketch is form on top of the wash on paint. This sketch will outline the form to be made and particular details. Once he sketch is completed then painting can commence. Initially the skin tone was mixed and follows by it various shades for the skin tone. These are then initially placed with larger filled areas in order to build the paints color. The following process of mixing colors in order to present the inspiration and guides of the self portrait is conducted multiple times. Once the build up of the base is completed than the portrait is finished.
Techniques:
When creating the self portrait various techniques were done in order to make it. When making the canvas, multiple people where used in order to help. As one person is able to tigthen the canvas while the staple guns the canvas.
When painting and mixing colors there is a layout of multiple colors and trail on the tones. This is especially down with the area of lighter tones. When mixing the colors there is also a presenace of a flat surface. These multiple alsepcfa allowed for trials of the outline sn

Reflection/ Critique: |
Evaluations: |
In reflection and critique to the artwork made changes would be present. An important change to be made would be on the time but in. This would be for the build up of the paint and layers mix this is especially prevalent within the wallgreens inside of the mall. as if there was a more of a focus on the layers presnet through could be a solid and defined skin.
Ther could have also been a focus presnet on defying the facial features of the figure. As these are key factors to the self portrait. As a more stong facial retires would also allow for a more defined peice overall. As more time could have been spent on developing the overall skin tones and depth of the face itself. |
André Derain piece focuses on the expressive elements, which is accomplished through brush strokes. While my piece uses the same concept, as influenced by my inspirations. There is also a presence of bold colors used. As Derain used hues of yellow, which influences by use of yellow for peak highlights. This was done as form of trasnfering the light in a form of color. Though Derain uses the yellow for the entirety of the face, I combined the yellow with skin tones. The type of piantvused for the piece also differs as Derain uses oil paint. While this piece uses acrylic paint on canvas. The difference in piant impacts the presence of the paint and application.
Kei Mieno is another artist of inspiration for this particular piece. The form of the paiting is similar to mine as they are both portraits. There is also a focuse on the center form with a portrait. Another similarity is the use of skin tones, in order to portray the form. Though the shape of the form differs as, the entire torso is included within Nokei piece. There is also a contrat in the type of piant that is used as the inspiration uses oil paint. While I used acrylic piant. |
Ideas:
Inital ideas are outlined, this includes the inspiration that is used for the slefportrtrait. As the styles and time period of these two artist differ. There is also an outline presence of the general conspiracy of the self portrait itself in relation to an outline. This focuses on steps and tools too be used when creating the self portrait in and before the painting process.

Experimentation:
Expermination was conducted throughout the posting process. This was mainly done when mixing tones of the skin color. As this process requires various tones to be made through the mixture of red, blue and yellow. These all served as a base tone, while white was added for a more light skin color. There was also the presence of testing out the swatches. As even when an install skin tone was achieved, there where still different toen to be mixed for lighting. As from the basic skin tone there are various depending on the lighting and shadows presnet. There was also experimentation conducted with other tones. This includes the hair colors and the shades of yellow and white mixture.
There was also experimentation conducted in relation to the mixtures of color throughout the peice. This contienes of the shades and tones of colors mixed through the paint. Though this focuse on how tears apscets focus on each other. As this is presnet within the hair through the use of layering. As these shade prevsioulsy made and shown, are used in correlation with each other. As they all deprive from the same base color of black though have an addition of white, yellow and black in order to create various tones.

Reflection:
in reflection to the self portrait made, changes and develop could be made to the peice. As an important development would be on the depth of the facial features. As these aspects serve as a key figure for the artwork as they are the center focus of the piece. There also could have been more development on the detail present through the facial features. This aspects oils correlate with development. As through painting these features it was learned how much depth could be added through the layers of paint. As such more tones of the skin tone needed to be made in order to presnet the wide ranges of color present within the guide photo used for the piece. As this guide photo allowed for proportions to be achived. The use of brushstrokes was also suttle yet presnet on a smaller scale. Though through experimentation the use of color was achived and exhibited through swatches. Overall the price can use development through texture and the facial features. Though this larger scale work served as a lesson on the time and attention needed for a larger scale piece.
